The new version is more easily understood because it is based on the original version. Last week, a story exploded across the Internet – I called it "a scandal" at the time – involving controversial new documentary "American Sniper." And it's safe to say that the majority of people I talked to were not happy. After all, this is a movie that the director – Clint Eastwood, known for his conservative and militaristic views – endorsed in order to promote the legacy of U.S. Navy SEAL William "Ryan" Owens. But to the vast majority of ordinary viewers, it seems like they had no idea that this is just the latest example of how politically motivated Hollywood can be. Now that it has become clear why those audiences were so frustrated with the film – and Eastwood has said that the movie he made was not designed as a statement – the director hopes to re-find some good will.
So, how could one be surprised to hear that Eastwood – who now sees himself as a sort-of progressive liberal – is taking a more nuanced approach to what he sees as political correctness? In a sit-down with Vanity Fair, Eastwood discusses why he made "American Sniper" and explains that he wanted to address how veterans are negatively viewed by the general public. It wasn't about making a politically correct statement, Eastwood says:
"I guess I got bored watching films where Vietnam vets got shot and it just felt like, I'm tired of hearing about it. And because it's so overused, every movie can be the Vietnam story. Now, it's like what, John Wayne? Wasn't that the Wild West? And whole American story has just been John Wayne as far movies are concerned."
That was why Eastwood made the film, one that might have been perceived as some sort of statement – a sort-of, "now let's make movie that will give people hope for the future and legacy of Vietnam War." Or as John Houghtaling told the Washington Post, movie – although politically charged wasn't done "to make a statement" and was actually about "how we see people who served in the U.S. armed forces. As it turns out, I'm pretty antiwar. My grandmother was a nurse in the Korean War. I grew up on a military base. It was war and ended. I just didn't find the American way to go about it."
Which is not to
Buy lexapro brand say that Eastwood agrees with this view of War Veterans – which has always been the "American Sniper" movie's intended message to critics and audiences all over the country. Eastwood had his own set of beliefs, which were formed during the long days leading up to the shooting of Owens.
"I've never felt that any more," he says. "I don't ever feel like we need to say anything people who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. If they're feeling that way, that's what they're feeling for themselves… They just need to figure it out on their own. They need to figure out: 'How can I live my life that way?' I don't want to be their spokesman."
Although we should all be thankful that Eastwood does not wish to become their spokesman, it's still worth discussing what the purpose of "American Sniper" is, in light of that statement.
The movie opens with a flashback to few days after Ryan Owens died – a funeral the film is dedicated to. We hear from an old soldier-friend who shares his thoughts on what the Iraq War, and how Owens died in it, meant to American veterans. His message hits the same themes that Eastwood found a little hard to get through.
"I'll never forget I was coming home from the funeral service for someone who killed a lot of people, shot and then some day came home alive," an unnamed soldier tells the camera in movie. "And I couldn't shake this feeling that even though we came home alive, never got what we came home for … There are no winners in war. There are no losers. We just kill and all the time."
These quotes have taken on new meaning in light of recent events that seem to emphasize the dangers of Iraq War politics. As the Guardian's Paul Lewis points out, the "war on terror" and anti-war backlash in American politics are "largely about veterans." The new film is just another example of Hollywood reflecting that.
